When Exile Became Expansion, A Wonderful Migration!
The early days of Islam—Mecca, a land where Muslims faced relentless oppression, stripped of their religious freedom. Amid this suffocation, the Noble Prophet ﷺ instructed some of his companions to migrate to Abyssinia (Habshah). They first reached Jeddah, then traveled by sea, landing on Abyssinian shores. When the Quraysh learned of their escape, they sent a delegation to incite the Abyssinian king and his nobles against the Muslims.
It was at this critical juncture that Ja’far ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه stepped forward. In the royal court, he delivered a compelling address, eloquently introducing Islam, explaining the purpose of the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ mission, and highlighting the profound social transformations Islam had brought to Arabia. He also presented a thoughtful comparison between Islam and Christianity. His words deeply moved the Abyssinian king, instilling in him a newfound respect for Islam. Seeking further clarity, the king dispatched a delegation of Christian scholars to Madinah. Upon hearing the words of the Prophet ﷺ, they wholeheartedly embraced Islam.
A Moment for Reflection: Leaving behind their homeland, seeking refuge in a foreign land, being pursued by the Quraysh delegation, and then being summoned to the royal court—on the surface, these events seemed unfavorable for Islam and its followers. Yet, through wisdom and strategic use of the situation, these migrants turned potential adversity into an opportunity for Islam. They presented its true teachings with composure, dignity, and patience, ensuring that their message resonated without offending the religious sentiments of their hosts. The result? The king developed deep admiration for Islam, and an entire delegation of Christian scholars accepted the faith. What was once seen as a local or tribal matter had now become an international discourse, all due to the sincerity, foresight, and wise approach of these early Muslim ambassadors.
Lessons for Us Today: For scholars and Islamic preachers, the approach of Ja’far al-Tayyar رضي الله عنه offers invaluable guidance. At first glance, modern criticisms and objections against Islam may seem harmful, but if addressed with intelligence and wisdom, they can serve as powerful avenues for dawah. Every question seeks an answer, and every doubt yearns for clarification. The choice lies with our scholars and preachers—whether to turn such moments into opportunities for conveying the truth of Islam or to limit themselves merely to reactions and protests.
